The town is named after a railroad pioneer

Yulee takes its name from David Levy Yulee, one of the most influential figures in early Florida history. He was a leader in Florida's push for statehood in 1845 and went on to become one of the state's first United States senators. He also holds a notable place in American history as the first Jewish person elected to the U.S. Senate.

He was known as the Father of Florida Railroads

David Levy Yulee earned that nickname by building the Florida Railroad, the first rail line to cross the Florida peninsula. It connected Fernandina on the Atlantic coast to Cedar Key on the Gulf, opening up trade and travel across the young state. The community that grew up around the line eventually took his name. Like many figures from that era, his legacy is complicated. He was also a plantation owner, and history remembers him as a man of both achievement and contradiction.
